The Role of Seals in Hydraulic Efficiency
The efficiency of a hydraulic cylinder is entirely dependent on its ability to maintain pressure without internal or external fluid bypass. This relies heavily on the quality and design of the cylinder seals. In recent years, advancements in polyurethane and PTFE (Teflon) composite materials have revolutionized seal durability.
Combating Heat and Friction
High-cycle applications generate immense heat, which historically led to premature seal degradation (hardening or cracking). The introduction of energized lip seals and advanced backup rings has allowed modern cylinders to operate at temperatures exceeding 250°F without losing their sealing integrity.
Preventative Maintenance for Cylinder Seals
- Regularly monitor the hydraulic fluid for contamination—particulates are the #1 cause of seal scoring.
- Ensure the rod wiper is intact to prevent dust and debris from entering the cylinder on the retract stroke.
- Maintain optimal fluid temperature using heat exchangers to prolong seal life.
